Take Social Now

62

Waiting is fine if you think you'll live well past 80.  That is approximately the age you will break even between choosing the early one and the full one.

USA Today Article

So health care will be the problem for most of us.  This is one area the government will try to trim costs and leave us all struggling and having to decide between meds, doctor visits, and dinner out.  Forget about big travel plans.

Boomers and Frugal Retirement

Adjusting to a Frugal Retirement

Learning to live within your means is a major part of becoming comfortable financially and also preparing you for less in retirement.  If you live on credit, debt, and work your life away just to keep up then if and when retirement comes you'll be very disappointed.

Americans are putting off retirement

Putting it off

No surprise here.   Cost of items like cars, homes, and education are up while wages are stagnant.  In terms of inflation adjusted dollars most have fallen behind.

What this means is that you should reduce your expectations if you hope to retire.

Think trailer instead of beachfront condo.

Think USA travel instead of world travel.

Think eating in rather than eating out.

Never Retire

Never Retire may be the new retirement

Tennis teachers have an advantage in this.  They often love their job.  Find something you love doing and make that your retirement gig.

Retire Early

https://www.fool.com/retirement/2017/04/02/3-reasons-to-retire-as-early-as-you-can.aspx

This is valid advice.  You really don't know how long you'll live and waiting may also mean when you're older that you won't be able to do what you once did.

Worst States to Retire

http://www.realtor.com/news/trends/youll-never-guess-best-worst-states-retire/

I can agree with Alaska.  Cold is no fun.

Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia make sense as not ideal places to retire.

But how about NY, NJ, NM,  Connecticut, and many of the high tax states.

Better options include Delaware  and Tennessee for low taxes.  Texas has a dynamic economy going for it.

South Carolina - Low Country Retirement

Failing Retirement

Here is a perspective on things you might try in retirement if your well planned and long desired retirement turns into days of nothing to do.  Volunteering for a non-profit may offer some way to fill your day without the commitment and pressure of a real job.

South Carolina:  As a place to retire I have considered the area around Hilton Head Island as my ideal due to climate, recreational options, and work.  Tennis is big in this area so it is first on my list of considerations.  If you find yourself thinking about a place to live this may be one good option for you in that you're still on the East Coast, the weather is mild, and you'll have plenty of retirees in the vicinity to associate with.

A World Without Retirement

A world without retirement

Things are not looking good for the future of retirement in the UK.  Of course they don't look good in the rest of the Western World either.

My Take:  Set aside enough to provide the basics which is what some call poverty.  In older years if you friends, food, and a warm and safe place to sleep that is often what you find is all that you need.  I have taken care of friends and family in those years and once you reach a certain age the idea of endless travel and living in luxury carries much less importance.  Focus on your life now so that if something comes to take you down early you can say you have no regrets.

Companionship Risks: Owner Killed by Pet Dog

Londoner Killed by his Dog at Home

As you age the idea that having a dog for companionship is appealing.  Think of a dog as a companion and not a self defense tool that is dangerous and with that in mind consider the breed or type that you keep in your home.
